Andy Valkenburg

The bass usually isn't a bass players first instrument. Neither is this the case with Andy Valkenburg, although he has always been fascinated by stringed instruments from an early age. He started playing the guitar before his first birthday, when he found one casually laying on the ground at home. In his early years he learned to play the instrument by watching his dad, who also plays the guitar. For theoretical matters he could always consult his mother, who is a schoolteacher with an extra curriculum in music. In high school he was involved in several bands on vocals and different instruments, like guitar, keyboards and electric bass. At the age of 18 he started playing double bass and one year later he decided to become a professional jazz musician.

Andy was admitted to the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and studied there for 7 years, attending several workshops with amongst others Barry Harris, Art Taylor and Cindy Blackwell (drummer with Lenny Kravitz). After his final exam he left to go and study in New York at the New School for Social Researches, where he took lessons from Buster Williams and Reggie Workman. He was gigging extensively in the New York jazz-scene and played regularly with Phil Harper and Jeremy Pelt. He also stood on stage with several well-known musicians like Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis and George Benson.

Now he's back in The Netherlands and is working regularly with Nina Ebbenhout, PostJazzCompany and Saskia Laroo.
