Thorsten Grau, Drums, 1972, Germany, took his first drum lessons in 1984. In 1990 he continued his studies
with Jeff Boudreaux at the “American Institute of Music“ in Vienna, and from
1993-1997 at the “Hochschule für Musik“ in Mannheim with Keith Copeland and
Freddy Santiago, graduating in 1997. From 1997-2000 he studied in The Hague at
the Royal Conservatory with Eric Ineke, and in Amsterdam with Marcel Serierse,
Lucas van Meerwijk and Kees Kranenburg. He also took lessons with Dom Fomularo,
Jim Chapin and Bill Stewart.
He has toured throughout many countries other than The Netherlands,
with Michael Erian Quartet (Austria, Slovenia), Quadrant (South Africa, Ivory Coast)
Mete Esker (Ethiopia), Take The Duck (Columbia), David Golek Group (Montreaux Festival), Kristjana Stefansdottir (Iceland).
He has performed on several CD recordings and won many awards, including in 1995
1st prize “Young drummers of Europe“ in Koblenz, 1998 Soloist prize- Jazz Festival
Breda, 1999 1st prize with Mete Erker’s Blink at the Festival in Breda, and in 2000 1st
Prize with Blink at the Dordrecht Concourse.
