Biography

Dutch born, in 1964, Stefan got his first piano lessons when he was eight years old.

During secondary school he started focusing on guitar and electric bass. At the age of 18 he started playing acoustic bass and entered the conservatory in Arnhem.

In 1989 he graduated cum laude at the Conservatory of Hilversum (currently the Conservatory of Amsterdam after it merged with the Sweelinck Conservatory).

In 1990 he obtained a scholarship from the dutch government to study with Marc Johnson in New York.

In 1991 Stefan won the award for best soloist at the Karlovy Vary Jazz Festival (Czech rep.).

In 2005 Stefan won the Deloitte Jazz Award.

Stefan is currently leading his own bands - 'Lievestro6', featuring Jesse van Ruller, Harmen Fraanje, Jasper Blom, Mete Erker and Hans van Oosterhout; 'Mona Lisa Overdrive', featuring Arno Krijger, Hans van Oosterhout and Jesse van Ruller.

In 2006 Stefan published his first cd as a leader, "Breakfast In Walhalla", to critical acclaim of press and audience.

In september 2007 Stefan wil be artistic director of the Jazz International Festival in Rotterdam.

Besides participating on numerous recordings with (mainly) Dutch and Belgian artists (Michiel Borstflap, Toots Thielemans, Ivan Paduart, Rick Margitza, Metropole Orchestra with Vince Mendoza...), through the years Stefan has performed on national and international stages and festivals with national and international artists. Stefan teaches acoustic and electric bass at the Conservatory of Gent (Hogeschool Gent), Belgium and acoustic bass at the conservatory of Rotterdam (Codarts).
