Paul Maassen (1981) first studied jazz piano at the Rotterdam Conservatory, and later graduated for his Master Of Music at the Utrecht Conservatory, educated by pianist Bert van den Brink. He was nominated for the Erasmus Jazz Prize 2004, and won the second prize of the Holland Casino Jazz Award 2007. As a band leader, he has his own acoustic wind-piano ensemble "Miro Move", featuring a.o. Bert Lochs and Ad Colen. Besides playing in the Jan Schröder Quartet, he also is side-man in the new formation "European Standards Project", lead by drummer Pieter Bast, and featuring a.o. Jasper Somsen. He also plays in the band of the young an gifted singer Laura Tuk.
As a accompanying pianist, he worked with a.o. Wouter Hamel, Vera Mann, Rotterdam Philharmonic and many more. Besides his activities as a jazz pianist, Paul also works as teacher, arranger, and band leader in the Musical business.
As a composer, he has written songs for many projects for both jazz, pop and Musical projects.
Paul also plays the carillon, an originally very traditional and typical Dutch instrument that is played by his family for already four generations. Trying to re-invent this peculiar instrument using his own experience as a jazz musician, he gave concerts in Belgium, Poland and of course the Netherlands.
