At the age of 8 Maurits Roes ( 02/02/1981, The Hague) started to play the piano. He took private lessons in Classical music. At a certain time he switched to Jazz because he wanted to explore his improvisation skills at the Music-school in The Hague. Tilmar Junius (Jazz-pianist) started to teach him private. In the meantime Maurits started to discover the Jazz music (playing with people, listening to music and visiting concerts) .Through this experience he wished to enter the conservatory. With the help of Tilmar Junius, Maurits entered the conservatory in The Hague in 2003. He was a student of Marc van Roon, Rob van Bavel and Juraj Stanik. He also participated in workshops with John Taylor, Dave Liebman, Billy Hart, Fred Hersch, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Stefano Battaglia and Franko D’Andrea.
At the moment (2007) Maurits is still studying at the conservatory in The Hague as a student of Jasper Soffers.
Some Highlights of performance are playing in the Bigband of the Conservatory at the Nort sea jazz festival (2006) in Rotterdam and he performed with an ensemble in the Anton Philipszaal in The Hague for the Dutch Radio Channel “Radio West”. He also performed in a short movie called “Grijns” which was nominated at the Rotterdam filmfestival.
